Not much activity on my balcony, except the silent growth of plants in spring (yes, spring in Australia). We are having a lot of rain, so the succulents are placed under shelter, and I have bought a new chilli plant. Each morning I look outside when get out of bed; excited at the prospect of seeing new flowers :). I love spring.

Hope you had a nice weekend. It’s a busy week for me, since I’ve started taking Japanese Language lessons. It’s a lot of fun but rather difficult. I look forward to the day when I can understand an Anime film in Japanese!

It’s Springtime in Australia and a few flowers have bloomed and more are on the way…
Tiny Crassula Anomala flower
Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana with it’s silvery green neighbour Eremophila Glabra. This is an Australian native which flowered a few weeks ago (during winter).
Poor Graptoveria Debbie has suffered in the recent hailstorm… it’s scarred but it will look better when the flowers bloom
It’s neighbour is slightly ahead… surrounded by jelly beans.

Sorry that I seem to have been MIA for a while. I have been on holidays. I am glad to say that the garden had survived well without me. So I am learning that perhaps I should not meddle with the plants as much as I did before.
It’s winter down under and there isn’t much sun on my balcony, but my kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos) above welcomed me home with lovely red/orange blooms.
Also on the positive side, my sedum gold mound was loving the rain and have grown a lot in my absence
I couldn’t believe that my chilli plant is still bearing fruits. Oh, those poor leaves. In the same pot, the sedum is having a ball, and loving the wet.
A few days after I came home, it hailed while I was in the gym. When I got home, I realised my succulents have been affected. This is a photo I took this morning…

And another. It is too depressing. Most of my succulents look sad, so I’ll stop at this last sad photo.
On the brighter side, this little baby which was exposed to the hail looks ok.
Looks like the geranium is happy too.
And my coriander is greeting the world.
I was wondering if I should have titled this post “The good, the bad and the ugly”…

OK, so you are thinking why I’d think anyone would be interested to know about me… this post is responding to being tagged by fellow blogger, Deepa of Deepaz World of Artz. I am answering only 5 of 40 questions (sorry Deepa, I am taking the easy way out!).
Hopefully, this won’t send you to sleep. Here goes…
Succulents! At the moment, I am thinking about gardening vertically.
My last effort was the topiary in a basket on the left (more on this in another post…). I am thinking of making 2 more.
I have been reading about yoga recently. I am not obsessed with it, but with a better understanding on yoga, I am enjoying the practise better. I attend group sessions a few times a week, and have a private lesson at home with a teacher every week.
An apartment in New York City, with a balcony overlooking Central Park, please!
When I visited NYC 9 years ago, I stayed with with my friend, Monique. Her home was a few blocks away from the Empire State Building. I enjoyed being in the heart of the city very much. My stay was just over a week. I would love to be in NYC for a while, to get to know the place and the people (but not as a tourist).
I have always wanted to be in the arts. It took me a long time to get here (this is a 2nd career), and I love my current job as a graphic designer.
How about this meal which I put together the last time we had friends over… I made marinated chicken and lamb tandoori style, cooked on the barbeque stove. The meat were served with cardamom and saffron rice. On the side, I had sliced cucumber dressed with tzatziki (Lebanese cucumber dip). My friend brought Perry (pear cider) and that complemented the meal very well. It was summer and we had the perfect dinner party on my balcony.
I went to a figure drawing session this morning. Here’s my final piece superimposed on a photo of succulents (above).

My pink jelly bean which has been with me for almost a year.
These are not mine, unfortunately. They are growing at my tennis club. They sure look a lot like jelly beans. I love them a lot; they look so juicy!
Graptoveria – love the drop of water in the middle.
This jade plant is growing at the tennis club. I am not sure if I like it. Jade plants don’t appeal to me, but I think the yellow leaves do stand out.

Jelly beans… love them! |
Did you know I love jelly beans? The succulent that is, not the candy. These lovely blue-green ones make me happy because they grow and grow. But they grew over the pot way too far, and got in the way of a visitor. Some fell to a heap of dismembered jelly beans on my deck – I was horrified!
I had cut them back a little, so these ones below need a new home… Maybe it is a good excuse to buy a pot, but I am determined not to buy more pots. You see, I’ve only got balcony space.

These 2 babies have no where to go, so here they are in my chocolate tins.
The agave (on the left) looks nice now, but I suspect I am going to hate it when it grows up (don’t have to worry about that – it will take a looooong time). It is already annoying me by grabbing my gloves every time I’m too close, or poking me with its evil sharp leaves.

But the little baby below is quite a gem (love that green) but still, it has no place to live, except in an old tin.

It has been 4 months since I made my vertical garden, and I have to report that things are moving quite slowly in that area…
For this vertical garden, I love plants that spill over the pots. I am happy with the Sedum Gold Mound below. Most succulents take a while to grow and I am rather impatient. So recently I added some herbs (scroll down for a picture).

The Crassula Diane below needs work. Red on red – not my intention! It was green when I planted it (as shown in the photo below the red crassula) but it turned red a few months ago, perhaps because the weather changed.

Plants come and go on my balcony.
I have had my run with bok choys. We have been eating so much bok choys that I don’t think we will be eating more of it in the near future. So at the moment, I have a dish full of bok choys in my kitchen, and a couple of empty pots in the garden…
