Beheaded Aeonium

Aeonium © Evelyn Howard 2010I have had my green aeonium for a few years. There was never much sun where I lived. The stalk kept growing each year, and it began to look like a miniature coconut tree (pictured on the left).

A few months ago, I finally cut it (*). The stalk is now 3 inches. The rosette is more prominent, and I think it looks much better (see photo below).

I have just completed this arrangement (below) today. The other plants in the photo are ivy geranium (behind the rosette, going up the trellis), centaurea gymnocarpa (don’t know the common name but it’s the white-grey plant) and seaside daisy (in between the white-grey plant and the aeonium rosette). All these plants require little water and well-drained soil, so I hope they are going to be happy together.

ps. (*) Like many types of succulent, when the stalk is cut, the “wound” has to be left to dry out before planting.

«Louis» has never been one to like succulents - but that may change if he keeps looking at this blog! ;-)

If you like the palm tree look (I know I do), you should check out a succulent called Euphorbia lambii...also known as Tree Euphorbia. There is a purple cvs too that the name is escaping me.

Hello Evelyn,
I love the combination of plants together. I think the white/gray plant really ties it all together :^)

Wow, that arrangement looks fabulous. Great tip about letting the cut stalk of a succulent dry before planting it.

These succulents look wonderful and so healthy. I can see you know what you are doing. It's good for me to read such things as I am not so knowledgeable about flowers and I learn a lot from posts like this. Thank you so much :)
