Do you know this plant? This is Pandan, which is widely used in Malaysian/Asian cooking. It has a nice aroma, and is many types of food including desserts and curries. The juice is often squeezed from the leaves, to be used as food colouring.

I arrived in Kuala Lumpur a few days ago. These photos were taken at my brother’s house, where most of the plants were cared for by my Mom.

This plant was mine before I left Kuala Lumpur. It has grown up a lot since then, under my Mom’s care.

Succulents in California, and a personal update

Here are a few more succulent photos taken in California.

These first two were taken in San Diego, outside a beautiful home. Besides the lovely succulents, I also love the colourful tiles in the first photo.

The next 3 photos were taken in Oakland.

On a personal note, my succulent garden in Australia has been put on hold, since I have recently moved to California. I would love a garden in California, but we are not quite settled yet. Soon I hope :). I will continue to take photos of succulents, flowers and plants that I come across, and share them with you on this site.

The weather was cold and windy, but Melbourne’s weather is lovely today. There was no wind so I managed to take some photos.

These plants have been left to fend for themselves over Melbourne’s winter while I was away, with a dripper that feeds water once a week. It was nice to come home to see some flowers :)

These plants have been untouched, so here are some blooms with spider webs.

This is the first time I am seeing so many of these Kalanchoe blooms. Maybe I should go away more often.

The Crassula Diane is a very hardy variety, and may have taken over some pots…

The Jade Plant is also quite hardy

Succulents all squished together – it’s survival of the fittest

If you can, grow tall – I’ve got to do something about these

La Jolla, San Diego

We went to La Jolla in San Diego for a brief visit. There were some nice succulents…

A garden bed with lovely succulents. I just love these aeoeniums – such a casual little arrangement but so lovely.

I went to the Contemporary Museum of Art, but I was disappointed that it was closed. But they had nice agaves…

and a lovely sculpture garden, which had lots of nice succulents.

La Jolla is by the sea. I spent a lot of time here drawing :)

I took many photos at the Conservatory of Flowers, but these will be the last few that I am uploading (for now)

I did not take note of the name of the one on top, but I am sure this one is a Euphorbia (but please correct me if I’m wrong)

This was labelled as Euphorbia Lactea or “White Ghost” – I love this a lot.

The cage-like container and the coat hanger (?) work well…

San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers (Part 1)

Admission to the Conservatory of Flowers is free on the first Tuesday of the month. So I packed my camera and went along. Luckily I arrived in the morning, because by the time I left a few hours later, there was a long queue to get in.

It was tricky taking photos because of the crowd. One could not linger and had to move on after taking a shot.

But I managed to take a number of photos, but just a few in this post to start with.

There were lots of pitcher plants.

Honestly, I don’t find them attractive, but I do find them very interesting… does that make sense?

I was having a cup of coffee after having been indoors in the damp and crowded environment. Glad to be outdoors, and glad I was not in the queue.

While in Palo Alto (California), I saw these beautiful purple flowers along a path. Lavender? I am not sure.

I love these purple grass; they look so soft.

And another purple variety – a weed maybe? I think it’s very cute.

Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco

Here are some photos which I posted on my other blog, but I thought they are appropriate for this blog as well, although not all photos are garden-related.

I visited the Japanese Tea Garden recently. It’s a beautiful place.

Interesting bridge stones. Walk carefully or you will get wet.

I didn’t get a chance to climb this bridge – it was full of kids. There was hardly room for me to take this photo, balancing myself on another bridge with excited parents, who were taking snapshots of their children.

Before the crowd came…. The bridge in front was the one that I was able to stand on, to take the above photo.

I love the stone lanterns. The garden is so lush.

Fabulous place. I spent many hours here drawing.

Lots of moss on the ground, and a beautifully trimmed bush in the background

There’s a tea house in the Japanese Tea Garden. I had udon, and it made me think of my time in Japan.

Sorry that I have not posted for a while. The truth is I hadn’t taken many photos of plants or flowers for a while. In my other blog, I upload photos of my travels and art frequently, so please visit me there too!

I visited the San Francisco Botanical Garden recently, and I hope that you will enjoy these photos.

But it was such a pretty place that I spent most of my time walking around and taking photos.

Beautiful spaces

Just a couple of little spaces that I came across while in Beijing, which I’d love to share with you.

When I am in this space, I feel like it could be anywhere out in the country. But it’s only a small space, and if I stretch my neck to look around, it is actually surrounded by buildings.

I feel inspired – how can I make make my little space at home cosy and provide it with a sense of seclusion?

A little “natural” arch with an interesting feature in the background. Such an inviting scene…

Mu Dan (Peony) in Beijing

I was walking around when I saw a couple of photographers with impressive looking equipment taking pictures of these flowers. A group of locals were quite excited… I went to see what it was all about.

One of the photographers explained that these are Mu Dan, which only flower briefly…. When I was there, most of the flowers were starting to wilt. I had to photograph selectively. The blooms were huge and they smelt lovely.

I remembered that my Mom asked me to look out for Mu Dan. I only had my point & shoot with me, but I took many photos for her.

These lovely blooms appear frequently in Chinese art, and the locals love them. One particular breed is highly valued as a medicinal herb.

Spring blossoms at the Great Wall of China

Since I am not gardening recently, I hope that you will appreciate some spring blossoms from China…

The landscape is changing quickly.

I noticed that the blooms are disappearing very quickly.

We were lucky to be able to see the blooms along the Great Wall.

I just love the scenery… gorgeous mountains as far as the eye can see..

I am getting confused with names of succulents. They are either Sedeverias, Sedums, Graptoverias, Aloes, Crassulas, Kalanchoes, Aeoniums or some other “similar” sounding names…

Whatever they are called, I love them. Here are a few more from the balcony.

This photo prompted me to write the opening paragraph. I love this baby… but I cannot tell you the name unless I hunt for its tag…

Sometimes I come across Blue Chalk Stick as the name of this lovely plant. I think it’s easier to remember than Senecio…

Kalanchoe… I think this specie is easier to recognised by the shape of its leaves.

Echeveria and sedum… someone asked if this blue grey bloom was a ghost plant in an earlier post. That would be an easier name to remember…

Sedum (probably)… wearing my Learner Gardener’s hat, this plant should not be classified as a succulent. Unlike the others, it loves water, so it messes up my watering routine.

There truth is I’ve given up on vegetables. They also mess up my watering routine and I don’t cook enough… These are my last few photos.

Have you seen a lonelier chilli?

Vietnamese mint makes me feel good as a gardener, like I’ve done something right. It just grows and grows and keep growing….

Oregano is also a happy plant on my balcony.

I love the smell of Rosemary. I cannot help but touch it.

The plants have enjoyed summer, and I have enjoyed seeing them grow… It’s autumn now. I went out onto the cold windy balcony this morning to take these photos. Just a few of my favourite pots to share…

On the right is Sedum Gold Mound, another favourite. I notice that it tends to grow too long in winter, but in summer, it’s nicer because it’s compact.

Creative pots

Spotted these in the city a few days ago…

There were too high up for me to take a good look…

Maybe holes were cut out in the middle, and pots placed in the holes. Your guess would be as good as mine…

The pots added a little bit of interest to an otherwise dull back lane. Maybe not the most functional, but definitely creative and interesting.

A friend offered me a yucca cutting some months ago. Reluctantly, I said “No, thanks. I haven’t got the space.”

No more plants please!

Recently, when I was at at friend’s house, she asked me if I would like some basil. I hesitated. “To cook with or to plant?” I asked, but it didn't matter what her answer was. I don’t cook much and I am running out of space on the balcony.

“To plant”. She went on the explain that she had basil growing in a pot, all ready for my balcony. How sweet of her!

“Thanks, but no” I answered. I don’t usually say no to plants.

It has been a year and a half…

..since I started gardening on my balcony, and since I started this blog. There were many experiments and lots of fun… but I think I will have to make some decisions about the space, and plants to keep and nurture. …probably easier that than deciding what to do with the rest of the plants!

What the experts say?

I consulted the books and these are just some things I need to consider:

To plan on paper first
Think about how I would like to use the space
Think about my lifestyle
Colour schemes and textures

So much to consider, so much to do. The last year and a half was like kindergarten gardening… now I get to start the next phase and do it all over again at Grade 1.

I spotted this creative flower display at breakfast one morning. All I can see are 3 metal rods, some bottles and strings to hold the structure together. I guess the tripod is also held together somewhere in the middle to ensure that it stays firmly upright. I fear that the rods might scratch the surface of the table but some soft felt glued to the bottom of the rods will protect the table.

I think it's very creative, and I love it.

Our apartment garden has been undergoing a little bit of change. We have a couple of new gardeners, and I noticed these new purple blooms planted recently. I love the intense shade of purple. I am looking forward to having a good look around with my camera.

I love zooming in. The little flowers seem more significant

You have seen this a few weeks ago, but they have not bloomed.

We call this Pig Face (ice plant) in Australia. It was a very hard one to photograph last week. I have attempted to photograph it a few times when there was no wind, only to find the flower closed up. Anyway, see next photo…

I have a few ongoing but not very exciting activities on my balcony including

Replacing my watering system, which decided to stop working
Repositioning pots as I am getting some sun on the balcony, and
Re-potting, etc.

House cleaning and watercolour painting go very well together. Today, I painted with watercolour. I am usually impatient when I have to wait for the paint to dry, so I went to and fro between painting and cleaning. That worked really well; I managed to let my paint dry and also cleaned the house :).

Live Writer bug?

It's weekend again! Once again, I ask myself where my week has gone.

Well, part of my week has been spent looking for a solution to a blogging issue. My thumbnail picture does not appear on the bloglists of other blogs. I searched google and some people seem to share the same problem, but no one has offered a solution that actually works.

I use Live Writer, and I think that might be the problem. When I post from blogger, a thumbnail appears on the bloglist. But when I post from blogger, there is no thumbnail. Are you a Live Writer user? Do you face this problem? If you do, have you any solution to share?

I am posting this from blogger so all should be fine. This is a workaround, but it is not ideal. I like Live Writer, and it gives me more flexibility to work on my computer, rather than on the web. I have been playing around with the html to make it look the way I want it... but I don't like html or any codes.

Beauty and the beast?

Lovely blooms from this succulent. I don’t know the variety but I see it often. The petals look like they have streaks of white, but that’s just pollen.

When it is not flowering, the pot is quite dull. This lives by the coast next to a restaurant – maybe it belongs to the restaurant. You will not be able to see it in the photo, but people use this as an ashtray – yuck! There are lots of cigarette butts in the pot. I am a non-smoker so I think that’s ugly, yet the pot with all those blooms is so beautiful.

From the Melbourne Botanical Gardens

It is a lovely spring day and the sun is shining… and we have just returned from a day out. When I arrived at the Melbourne Botanical Gardens in Melbourne (Australia, that is…) earlier today, there were many people there already. Families were there having picnics, doggies were enjoying themselves although they could not roam free (they had to be on leashes at the gardens…. but hey, a day out is still a treat) and many people were walking about taking photos...

I found a rose section. The wind was blowing and the sun was high, so it was a challenge to take a nice close-up. This is my best shot I think…

My point and shoot works well sometimes…

Interesting flowers (I am assuming these are flowers) that I have never seen on this tree before.

Australian Natives Blooms

My friend Sue and I try to catch up every week to draw outdoors. We go to libraries, coffee shops, gardens or anywhere that we can be comfortable enough to draw. Last week, we went to a cafe for coffee and cakes, and there was this huge bunch of flowers in a champagne bucket.

I hope you had a nice weekend. I have had a very nice weekend drawing, drawing, drawing and more drawing – you get the idea. So I am a little bit exhausted but I am on a roll, so more drawing today. Sedum Gold Mound – this is a recent photo but yellow flowers have bloomed the last few days.

Aeonium – one of my favourite.

Senecio – these are not mine. A photo from the neighbourhood.

My aloe is having babies – oops, I am a bad gardener. This photo was taken a few months ago, and I have not separated the pups yet. I must check on the plant tomorrow morning!

Graptoveria

Does this look like it could be an evil man-eating giant flower one sees in the movies?

I can’t decide if I like it or not…It belongs to the Graptoveria on the left. I had forgotten what its flowers look like, so I was a little surprised when it bloomed.

I love Sedum Gold Mound. It is one of the first few succulents I started with.

Here’s a more interesting variety:

This is a photo I took while hiking in Korea. I have no idea what this flower/plant is, but it’s an interesting and unusual variety. I love the colour and shape. The flower was very low to the ground…

Seaside daisy

Hope you are having a nice week. My week has been busy, but it’s okay since it is the good kind :). I have been drawing the last few hours, while cooking. I am realising that I haven’t got a lot of patience. I had to stop a few times. The break helps me to re-focus when I sit down to continue the piece.

I was drawing from a photo of daisies I no longer have, but this photo was taken just a few days ago. This is Seaside Daisy (Erigeron) which is hardy and suitable for coastal planting. Great for my balcony.

I love weekends. I had thought of going to the farmer’s market but it’s been raining. The prospect of having a nice day out is slim. We might just have a cosy weekend at home.

Not much activity on my balcony, except the silent growth of plants in spring (yes, spring in Australia). We are having a lot of rain, so the succulents are placed under shelter, and I have bought a new chilli plant. Each morning I look outside when get out of bed; excited at the prospect of seeing new flowers :). I love spring.

Remember my post titled Fragile Vase? I went to Nacional for lunch today, and they are using the vases covered with packing tapes again.

The blooms in them are really stunning. The waitress was going to check the name of the flowers for me, but she forgot… so sorry, I don’t know the name (see Update below). Hopefully you know, and can tell us what it is.

Update:
Thank you origa-me, who has helped id the flower. The botanical name is 'Telopia Speciossisima', and the common name is 'Waratah'. It is an Australian native and the state flower of New South Wales.

Happy Cactus Monday.

I am noticing some lovely colours on my succulent leaves recently.

I have never seen the leaves of my Jade Plant turn yellow and red before. I could never get excited about Jade Plants before, but now I am liking it a little more.

Kalanchoe Flapjack in green and red

Can anyone id this?

A friend gave me this succulent a while ago, and I have no idea what it is. It started flowering recently. The flowers are quite sweet.

Here is a photo of the leaves… The plant is small (about 6 inches tall) and when the branches grow long, they fall over the side of the pot.

Is anyone able to id this succulent (See update below)? Would appreciate your response. Thanks.

Update: Thanks to Marianne, I am quite sure the above succulent is Kalanchoe Uniflora. I am really excited, having seen some amazing photos on the web. This plant has a prostate habit, thus is suitable for hanging baskets. It flowers in winter (which is right – it was winter in Australia a few weeks ago), and needs to be cut back in Spring. Fantastic to have flowers to brighten up winter.

It’s Springtime in Australia and a few flowers have bloomed and more are on the way…

Tiny Crassula Anomala flower

Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana with it’s silvery green neighbour Eremophila Glabra. This is an Australian native which flowered a few weeks ago (during winter).

Poor Graptoveria Debbie has suffered in the recent hailstorm… it’s scarred but it will look better when the flowers bloom

It’s neighbour is slightly ahead… surrounded by jelly beans.

I saw these sweet succulents at a cafe recently.

I have been tempted to use take-away coffee cups (amongst other things) in the past… These look so pretty in the pristine white coffee cups, especially in a row by the window.

I love them – great short-term pots for the cafe.

I forgot that I have these photos. They were taken in Cameron Highlands in Malaysia a few months ago. I love the Sedum (I am quite sure these are Sedum Burrito) above – they sure look healthy and happy.

Lovely Jade Plant (Crassula Ovata) – not a scratch or blemish on these leaves. Mine got scarred during a recent hailstorm so I wish mine were a little bit like these ones…

Remember I posted the drawing on the left a few weeks ago? We went to Nacional for breakfast again this morning. They have another interesting vase today…

The vase on the left decorated the long table at Nacional last time we were there. It was standing upright with a bunch of tulips, and covered with a brown paper bag. I enjoyed that…

Today’s bunch of blooms is in a vase covered with packing tapes, with the word “fragile”. I enjoyed this design too – very unique and interesting.

We were in Hobart, Tasmania a few weeks ago and I spotted these outside the hotel. I love their gorgeous colours.

Our hotel was near Salamanca place. The street turns into a farmers/craft market every Saturday. Below is a view of the stalls and in the background, the top of Mount Wellington is seen covered with snow.

DIY capillary watering while on holiday

My husband and I organised our recent overseas trip in 24 hours, so I hadn’t much time to get my plants organised. I had 3 pots of Spathiphyllum or Peace Lily that had to stay indoors (they do not like too much sun) so I set up a DIY capillary watering system, and crossed my fingers.

This is my set-up:

I used cotton shoe laces (removed the plastic ends) and treaded one through each pot hole. My laces were about 1/2 inch (1 cm) thick
Then I placed the pots on an oven grill, which rested over the rim of a bucket of water
I filled up the bucket with as much water as possible
The bottoms of the pots were well above the water so they stay dry; but the bottom end of the 3 laces were in the water
I placed them in a bathroom with no window, and closed the door

10 weeks later…

On the way home, a few extreme scenarios crossed my mind. One was that the plants had died and I’d find all sorts of creatures living off and in my bucket of water. When I told my friend about it later, she suggested that the might have been a jumanji situation, where my plants had grown so much that all the walls of my bathroom would be covered by crawling lilies and I would have trouble opening the door.

Anyway, all was well…

The bigger plant was sad and dry. Maybe if I had used 2 shoelaces for this pot, it would have got enough water.
The other 2 smaller plants were well. There was even new leaves (see photo below), which were white/yellow! I took the pots out of the bathroom, and a few days later, the new leaves turned green.

I am amazed by how resilient the lily is. And also how well the system worked; water seemed to defy gravity.

I think the best way to keep the plants alive is to have someone water them while on holiday. If that’s not available, this is a method I’d use again.

Brown Paper Bag Vase

We went to a cafe named Nacional for breakfast. We joined some people at a huge table. There were 2 bunches of flowers on the table; both were wrapped in brown paper bag. They were standing upright, so I guess there must be a vase or a bottle inside the paper bag. I think it’s a very attractive way to show off the flowers. It’s also very unique. I am not sure if these buds are tulips… but I just wanted to draw them.

Portulacaria

Happy Cactus Monday.

After the hail came and damaged some of my succulents about 2 weeks ago, I decided to give them some attention. There was not much I can do except remove the mushy leaves where I can. The Portulacaria has lost some leaves but not too many. The pot will look better when the Portulacaria grows a little taller and the sedum fills up the bottom section of the pot. My plant is only little. The Portulacaria can grow really big (5 feet) and be used as a screen.

“See no evil” teddy bear does not usually live next to the pot… Just me having a bit of fun…

I got quite carried away with my camera and decided to zoom in onto the sedum…

The sun came out and it was a little warmer one day last week. I decided to go for a walk in the Melbourne Botanical Gardens. Here are a few of photos I managed before it got cold again, and I abandoned my walk and left.

After the holidays

Sorry that I seem to have been MIA for a while. I have been on holidays. I am glad to say that the garden had survived well without me. So I am learning that perhaps I should not meddle with the plants as much as I did before.

It’s winter down under and there isn’t much sun on my balcony, but my kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos) above welcomed me home with lovely red/orange blooms.

Also on the positive side, my sedum gold mound was loving the rain and have grown a lot in my absence

I couldn’t believe that my chilli plant is still bearing fruits. Oh, those poor leaves. In the same pot, the sedum is having a ball, and loving the wet.

A few days after I came home, it hailed while I was in the gym. When I got home, I realised my succulents have been affected. This is a photo I took this morning…

And another.

And another. It is too depressing. Most of my succulents look sad, so I’ll stop at this last sad photo.

On the brighter side, this little baby which was exposed to the hail looks ok.

Looks like the geranium is happy too.

And my coriander is greeting the world.

I was wondering if I should have titled this post “The good, the bad and the ugly”…

Japanese gardens

Garden at Kiyomizu-dera temple in Kyoto - a very green area with stones, lanterns and water. The ground cover is moss. It was raining heavily, so I didn’t take many photos.

Hanging vases – photos from Japan

I came across a number of hanging and wall-mounted vases with fresh flowers in Japan. I think it’s a great idea. Here are a couple of photos:

I passed this place everyday when I was in Kyoto. There was always freshly cut flowers outside the main gate. Adds a nice touch, don’t you agree?

Japanese gardens – less is more…

We were looking for a restaurant located in a fancy suburb in Osaka and while walking around, I had the chance to admire the many plants I see in front of homes.

I could have taken a lot of photos, but my husband was worried that we might not be able to find the restaurant – there were no road signs.

I love this arrangement of rocks and plants. The entire arrangement is so pleasing to the eye from top to bottom and it makes the entrance so inviting.

Simple but really lovely to have part of the tree leaning over the entrance

How about these…? They are so neat and lovely, but I imagine that there is a lot of work involved to keep them this way.

We did find the restaurant. It did not look like a restaurant from outside, but because we had made a reservation, a kimono-clad lady was outside by the road waiting for us.

We could not see their garden from the road. We entered through the door on the left. This garden only has a few plants, and the groundcover is moss. The number of items here is less than most western gardens but it is such a lovely space.

I began to wonder if I could incorporate the idea of “less is more” (not necessarily Japanese) into my little garden. Japanese gardens also focus on forms, structures and foliage… which make me think of succulents. More for me to ponder over.

A few months ago, I posted photos from Cactus World in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. It is a big plant nursery, and there are rows and rows of small potted cactus like the ones below.

Pots for sale. They look like they might been growing at the nursery a long time…

I think that if they were better presented (e.g. in a nice pot, or combined into a cactus garden in a pot), they would sell more quickly.

We stayed in China for 4 weeks – one week in Hainan Island and 3 weeks in Beijing.

One of the gardens we went to was called the Purple Bamboo Garden.

There were no purple bamboo, but there were lots of green ones. It was a beautiful place.

There were many groups singing and playing music. People in these groups (and other community groups in parks) tend to be older – retirement must be a really fun time in Beijing :)

And an area for foot reflexology… It can be quite painful where the stones are sharp.

Last day in China….

On our last day, we decided to find a garden to just sit and read. We found this quiet place with these lovely elevated planters.

Hutong is a description for small narrow streets with traditional houses in Beijing. While holidaying in Beijing, I spent my first week in a guesthouse in a hutong, and it was fantastic to walk around with a camera. I spotted this lovely rose which I thought is a contrast to its surroundings.

At the front of this provision shop, brooms, mops and all sorts of household items are displayed for sale.

We had breakfast here some mornings. They serve lovely dumplings. On one morning, I spotted this group sitting at our favourite table. Notice the old man on the right, all dressed up from head to toe in traditional Chinese costume!

I seldom came across quiet spaces in Hong Kong, but this roof-top garden is one of those places. I had the place to myself for a while. I love the colours and the space, and the contrast between the sculptural elements and the plants (also love the agave!).

I am intrigued by these 2 trees, which seem happy in a rather odd place.

And this plant seems to be growing from the side of a building, a few floors above the ground.

And finally, to conclude my Hong Kong photos for now, I’d like to share this photo of a simple yet very pretty floral arrangement.

As I wonder around Hong Kong, I see many design ideas for small spaces that inspire me; one of them is the few vertical gardens I came across.

The above two photos were taken along a pedestrian walkway to a subway station. The plants add some greenery to a closed-up area and provide comfort to the seating area of a busy place.

Hong Kong Flower Market

The Flower Market Road in Mongkok is the place to feast your eyes on colourful and exotic plants. I had a wonderful time looking and taking photos. It was very busy – people in Hong Kong must love flowers a lot.

I had to take a second look to see if the cat was real. It was.

Greetings, I am still travelling and I hope everyone is well. These are photos I took in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia.

Lovely delicate flowers on a the top of a very prickly cactus. This first one is for Cactus Monday, although I think I may be too late for it.

One of my favourite plants in the tropics is the Heliconia. The colours are stunning and bold.

Fantastic foliage. I was blown away. I would love some of these in my garden.
